BIOGRAPHY
María Mercedes Coroy is a Guatemalan actress, born on September 3, 1994, in Santa María de Jesús, Guatemala. Originally from the Kaqchikel Mayan people, she grew up with her own cultural representations that sparked her interest in art, specifically in acting, participating, from the age of 6, in plays that showed part of her culture and customs. However, her family situation was pressing and she had to leave her studies for a time to support her parents’ business. By 17 she was able to go back to school and she was lucky enough to meet director Jayro Bustamante, who invited her to work on her debut feature, Ixcanul (2015). Coroy’s enormous talent has paid off and she has been able to work in the international production Bel Canto (2018), be the protagonist of the series Malinche (2018) and reunite with Bustamante in the acclaimed film La Llorona (2019).
