How to Delete a Fitbit Account
If you have one, I recommend you go to settings and disable all notifications for the app. Bottom Line: The Charge HR is a fun tool that does an okay job of measuring heart rate – but not as well as chest strap monitors. They’re great at counting steps and estimating distance traveled. Battery life lasts about five days with 24/7 HR monitoring enabled. For training, use manual HR recording if accuracy matters (and it usually does).
While my running GPS watch of choice over the last few years has been Garmin’s Forerunner 620, I was nevertheless intrigued by Fitbit’s new Charge HR. It offers continuous heart rate tracking – both under your shirt and out in the open on its OLED display – along with the ability to count steps and estimate distance traveled. For a supposed low price of $150, it seemed like something I might be interested in trying out.
Just a quick note before we begin: Despite its name, you can’t use this device for any actual Fitbit-based counting or tracking (e.g., steps taken) until you connect it to the app via Bluetooth on your smartphone. It’s only then that all your stats are uploaded to your account page (which many people call their dashboard). Although both the app and a whole host of other sites/services sync with your Fitbit data, this post is just about exploring how well it measures heart rate alone.

I wore the Charge HR outdoors while running during two separate sessions: once on a treadmill and then a second time outside on trails. I also used it to track HR when doing various workouts in the gym. For all of these tests, I was wearing a Garmin chest strap (with optical HR sensor) during the same time frame as the Charge, giving me solid data against which to compare Fitbit’s values.
For let’s say 99% of my runs over the years, I’ve gone without using any heart rate monitor. When I do use one, it’s with a Garmin FR620 or Forerunner 230/235 – both of which have consistently performed well for me over hundreds of hours worth of training. In fact, for this post and given its low price point, I had no intention of using a chest strap to test HR accuracy for the Charge HR. I fully figured that it would be good enough. However, after my first run with it on Valentine’s Day, I was instantly taken aback by how far off Fitbit’s values were from the Garmin data:
The above image is of just one run where both devices were running at the same time. The blue line indicates HR data from the Garmin and red represents what was recorded by the Charge HR. As you can see, they’re pretty different! When we get into talking about averages and standard deviations later in this post, you’ll see that these kinds of differences are by no means isolated to just this session – they happen all the time. At least as far as my testing goes.
Bottom line: I’m sure a lot of you – especially the females – will read that image and think “well shit, what about all that variability? Can you even see the data points?” Well yes, in fact I can. And it’s just as easy for me to show you some other graphs which are far less clear-cut than this one. For instance, here’s another graph from a different day with three different devices (FR235 in blue, Charge HR red):
